Episode 4: A New Blog

A new blog?  Why now?  Why me?  Why is it called Gaufqwi?  What is a “gaufqwi”?  How do you pronounce “gaufqwi”?

These are questions that have troubled philosophers for millennia, and there are no easy answers, save one: It’s GOFF-kwee, rhymes with “maufqwi”, of which there is no such thing.

But seriously.  As much as I have enjoyed the challenge of fitting my thoughts into the 420 character limited, third person syntax of a Facebook status, I have been increasingly interested of late in putting the macro back into my blogging.  I still have a Livejournal, but only a few of my friends have LJ accounts and fewer still read them.  While I’m not looking to be any kind of star of the blogosphere, I would like a slightly larger potential audience.  So hopefully I’ve been able to set this up in such a way that people can read and comment on it easily using their FB credentials.

That said, I know that lots of people have embraced Facebook precisely because it enables them to keep up with a  variety of friends without having to visit dozens of blogs a day.  So it won’t hurt my feelings if most of my FB friends ignore most of my blog entries.  Actually, I consider the “apathy filter” plus the extra click or two needed to read blog posts a feature, not a bug.  I may occasionally take advantage of this feature to do some posts that are “too hot for Facebook”, though “too hot” in this context will mean “too self indulgent” much more often than “too many wirty dords”.  In any event, I’ll try to headline, categorize, and tag everything so that people can read what suits and ignore the rest.

As for “Gaufqwi”, the short answer is that it is a word that has been kind of a private trademark of mine for nearly twenty years.  I’ve recently been doing some Java programming and just by default used org.gaufqwi as the prefix for my packages, so, blogging aside, I kind of needed to lay claim to the domain.  The beginning of the longer answer is that “gaufqwi” refers to a sport I invented in high school when my friend Jim badly misremembered the name croquet.  This site is still a work in progress, but there should be a link to the complete rules of gaufqwi around up here soon.
