Shoeless Trivia: Episode 106 (Middle School CS)

These questions are among those I asked for Computer Science Education Week when I was teaching full time. CSED week is in December, so there is no particular reason why I’m using these questions today other than I just remembered I have them.

These question were posed to students as multiple choice, but you’re playing on nightmare mode.

  1. What daughter of Lord Byron is considered the world’s first computer programmer even though the computer her programs were written for, the analytical engine, was never built?
  2. The hexadecimal number system is based on powers of what number?
  3. In 2011 what question answering computer developed at IBM defeated two Jeopardy champions in a million dollar tournament?
  4. What standard for short range wireless communication was named for a tenth century Danish king? It is often used to connect cell phones to a car speaker systems.
  5. What mathematician described a test that might be used to determine if a computer is really intelligent? This person’s work breaking German codes helped win World War II.
